MEDWAY Expands Rail Network with New Services in France and Austria

MEDWAY, the rail logistics arm of MEDLOG, has just launched its first services in Austria and France.

On 14 December 2025, MEDWAY France operated the first service between Caffiers and Dunkirk for a customer in the steel industry. Three days later, MEDWAY Austria and MEDWAY Italia introduced a tri-weekly service connecting landlocked Linz and Wels to Trieste, Italy's largest container port.

Both new services will support the transition to sustainable logistics, while enhancing access to global markets for regional businesses. The France service will run 365 days a year, carrying up to 3,600 tonnes per train of critical raw materials (lime and limestone) to one of Europe’s largest steel production plants.

The Austrian service is designed to integrate seamlessly with MEDLOG’s existing intermodal network, ensuring reliable and efficient connections between key European hubs. It will be particularly beneficial to customers in the forestry, paper, pulp, automotive and retail sectors, which depend heavily on North-South cargo flows.

France and Austria: the missing links in MEDWAY’s rail network

Established in 2016, MEDWAY is present in seven European countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. The addition of France and Austria will enable cross-border trains along the horizontal axis of the continent, building on existing North-South routes and connections within the Iberian Peninsula (where MEDWAY is the largest private rail freight operator).
